For your consideration is this Plains Indian style lizard effigy pipe tomahawk. This is a well crafted pipe tomahawk showing a birds head mouthpiece with tubular hexagonal bead and Parfleche wrapped horse hair braid attached. The haft shows hardwood construction with a lizard carved into the top part of the haft with three notches carved into the other side of the haft. In Plains Indian tribes, lizards are associated with healing and survival, and also with masculinity. In other tribes, lizards are associated with protection (especially of children), prosperity, renewal, and good luck. The axe head shows iron construction with a octagonal pipe bowl on one side and a broad axe head on the other side; and a shoot of dyed horse hair adorning the top of the axe head. The condition of this pipe tomahawk is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows a slight oxidation patina to the blade of the tomahawk. This tomahawk appears to be of contemporary age. The measurements of this pipe tomahawk are 19" x 6 1/2" x 1 1/2".
