Plains Indian Yellow Painted Warrior Drum c. 1890
The lot features a monochrome yellow mineral painted warrior drum “Tom-Tom” from the Plains Native American Indians dating to circa 1890. The piece shows a wetted and stretched parfleche rawhide front which is wrapped over bent wood frame and is sinew rawhide sewn. The piece shows all old nail construction with the Indian tanned hide ties which meet at the center. The drum is also accompanied by an original museum collection tag (made by Jennison U.S.A.) which is marked with the collection year of 1935 and “Tom Tom about 35 years old” which would place this drum as being from circa 1890’s. The piece has a nice even mineral pigment yellow ocher natural painted finish. Provenance: From one of the largest and most prominent American Indian collections in Montana. The piece was examined by an American Indian expert and found to be an authentic Plains circa 1890 drum. The drum does not show any direct symbols or painting to denote a specific tribe, but yellow ocher paint used as a background color is prominent in Cheyenne and Northern Cheyenne drums such as the Cheyenne Ghost Dance Shield from the Yankton Museum which sold in our June 2019 sale for $8,500 and similar to the three color Cheyenne war drum from our February 2017 sale. The drum shows all the correct patina and wear from use for its early authentic 19th Century age. Measures overall 16.75” diameter by 3”D.
