Available for sale is this spontoon pipe tomahawk from the Plains Native American Indians and dating to circa 1890-1900. Provenance: The piece was found to be an authentic circa 1890’s Plains Spontoon Pipe Tomahawk by the experts at Holabird Western Americana Collections Auction and was listed in their 2017 Cowboy Con Sale with an estimate of $6,500. The piece is from the ex-collection of the Cowboy Connection in Livingston, Montana a high-end American Indian and Cowboy Weapons collection. The piece shows a cast spontoon head in a typical common form with wide tapering spontoon blade with wide flat basal processes, large smooth eyelet hole and tall smooth pipe bowl with single filed band at the top. The eyelet hole shows a plugged clean out hole and the head is secured to the solid wood haft handle with solid brass trade tacks. The haft handle is beautifully adorned with poured bullet led pewter inlaid bands found near the head, two near the middle and the smoking tip. The front first and third bands have a triangular form on either side which matches the heavy poured smoking tip with the same inlay. The smoking tip has an inlaid rifle cartridge. The haft overall has various file burned bands and a nice coloring. Overall measures 20.75”L with a head that is 11.75”L by 4.5”W by 1.75”D. Nice later cast head.
