Plains Indian Headdress Ceremonial
dyed horse-hair suspension attached at the bottom of a roundish boss of feathers which also radiate an upright cluster of various other feathers. A frontispiece of buffalo-calf hair is banded below by a wide band of beadwork on a turquoise glass bead background-all appliqued on a brain-tanned and smoked strip. The sacred Four (4)-directions motif is depicted in red and white and black glass beads. The liner of the headdress is a deep crimson suede, sewn with commercial threads. Extending upwards from the bead headband is another cluster of raptor feathers
The variety of bird, snake and animal parts (feathers, hair, fur, talons and skins) used in the creation of this headdress, make a tremendous example of the skill of this master craftsman. In very fine condition, with only a small loss of feathers from the side mounted bosses.
