This is a Plains Tomahawk with beaded drop. The piece shows a wood haft handle of an ovular form with a dark brown patina. The axe head shows a flaring metal head with a pointed end, also called a spike. The tomahawk has a greyish dark coloring and some visible metal working marks. The beaded drop shows an Indian tanned hide with 19th Century glass trade seed beadwork in a geometric pattern in greasy butterscotch yellow, chalk white, and semi-transparent green. The drop is sinew sewn and held onto the handle with a single brass tack The This tomahawk head measures 6 3/4" long with a 2 1/4" blade and a 1 1/8" wide. The piece is very similar to Lot 149 from a Christies Auction in 2000, which had an estimate of $1,000-$2,000.
