This lot features a collection of 10 pipes in a swiveling genuine walnut pipe rack that has a glass canister in the center for holding tobacco. The pipes themselves range in condition from poor to good used condition. Three standouts in this collection are a Clairmont Paronelli (Italy, marked "Handmade"), a Savinelli "Dry System" (Italy), and a Kirsten (USA). The Paronelli features a bold octagonal bowl and is marked "Handmade/ Extra". The Savinelli and the Kirsten each offer unique solutions to the problem of moisture--"Wet Smoking", as Savinelli calls it. The Savinelli solution is this "Dry System" design. According to Savinelli's web site, the pipes have a built in moisture trap in the shank. It can be smoked with or without a balsa filter that mops up the trapped moisture; the result being a "cool dry smoke". The Kirsten was was designed by Professor Frederick K. Kirsten after his doctor advised him to quit smoking cigarettes. Kirsten, who was a Professor of Aeronautical Engineering and had created the Kirsten WInd Tunnel (among other things), dreamed up a unique system designed to trap the moisture, tars and acids problematic to pipe smoking. The result is this unique pipe with a "radiator body", made out of aircraft grade aluminum. These three unique pipes are among those in good used condition. The pipe rack measures 8" x 8" x 6.5".
