When Miles finally retired in 1903 he had attained the rank of Lieutenant General and held the office of Commanding General of the United States Army. The office of Commanding General of the U.S. Army was abolished when Miles retired, being replaced by the statutory office, Chief of Staff of the United States Army. Miles was instrumental in the Indian Wars of the late 1800's. General Miles died in 1925; he was one of the last surviving general officers who served during the Civil War on either side.
