Percussion half stock rifle, .45 cal., 36” octagon barrel, plain wood stock, double set triggers that are working at time of description, in overall fair condition showing a dark patina to metal surfaces, barrel has inlaid silver plaque on top rib and is signed “O. L. Z. Sheetz”, although the double set triggers are working, the hammer does not stay on full cock; the lockplate is held in by 2 old screws and 2 old copper washers; the ramrod and its two ferrules are long missing andthe stock shows wear, some age cracks and is missing a section of wood beneath the upper tang and the back of the barrel assembly; there is also a small loss behind the end of the upper tang. Why the detailed description of an old piece ofAmericana like this? Because before it was “put up”, it likely provided food on a family’s table and gave protection for years and was repaired with whatever was available as people “made due” when finances were tight and didn’t dispose ofuseful tools when they could be repaired and kept in service.
