Manufactured by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, Rhode Island. Developed and tested during the Civil War the Peabody Carbine entered production after the end of the war. Significant quantities of this advanced carbine were subsequently purchased by many foreign countries. The carbine had a blue barrel and casehardened barrel band, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate. The receiver is marked "PEABODY'S PAT./JULY 22. 1862" on the left side and "MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I.", (first line fading), on the left side. There is a small "M" on the left side of the barrel at the breech, "R" on the lower tang and an "E" on the buttplate tang. The buttplate tang is also marked with a crown proof and "3.2". There are no visible caliber designations. Blade front sight, two leaf folding rear sight graduated to 500 yards, saddle ring mounted on the left side of the receiver/stock wrist and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with a sling swivel on the barrel band and straight grip stock with a steel carbine buttplate and sling swivel.

Serial Number: 7234
Condition: Very good. All metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brownish patina. The wood is very good with some overall scattered minor nicks and dings. The markings are fine. The action is fine. Additional Information: The serial number "7234" is actually located on the face of the receiver and underside of the barrel. The barrel lenght is 20 5/16 inches and has a flat muzzle crown and the ram rod channel in the forearm has an old wooden plug. Therefore we believe this is actually a shortened rifle.
