This is a fantastic beaded knife sheath and stag horn file knife from the Pawnee Native American Indians dating to circa 1860-1870's with an original collection museum tag. The tag is marked, "Pawnee Indian beaded knife sheath and bone handle Kearney, Nebr. circa 1893 / 31". The tag denotes that the piece was collected from the Pawnee Indians of Kearney, Nebraska in circa 1893. The sheath shows an excellent Indian tanned hide which has a rich chocolate authentic patina and is covered in a wonderful traditional geometric beaded pattern. The beadwork is all 19th Century period correct glass trade seed beads in chalk white, semi-transparent green, red, and cobalt which is all sinew sewn, a true attribute to its early age. The sheath is also sinew parfleche sewn and also shows an original tie with a drop of horsehair. The knife is constructed from a forged iron file which is secured to a Stag Antler grip with rich yellow brownish patina. The tag is an early manila tag which is marked with typewriter print. Provenance: From a large American Indian and Western collection in Iowa. The sheath measures overall 9.5"Lx 33.5"W" and the knife is 10 5/8"L with a 6.25"L blade.
