Pattern 1839 Light Artillery Saber Belt with Pattern 1839 Artillery Belt Plate. This belt was the standard saber belt for mounted artillerymen during the Mexican War and supported the Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber. The belt is constructed of white buff leather and is complete with the two-piece, brass, "US" Model 1839 Belt Plate, buff leather keeper, brass parade hook and short and long buff leather saber straps with brass finials. The inside of the belt is stamped with a crisp, black ink, maker's mark "EDGAR PRAY,/ MANUFACTURER, NEW YORK." beneath a spread Eagle and the partially legible, hand written, name and unit designation. A second, illegible, name and unit marking is written on the outside of the belt near the male end of the buckle. The Pattern 1839 Light Artillery Saber Belt with 1839 Belt Plate remained in service with the regular Army until 1851 and was used by state militia units until the Civil War.

Condition: Excellent. The white buff leather is unstained, has never been pipe-clayed and has tight stitching. The maker's stamp on the inside of the belt is in nearly perfect condition. The belt plate and brass fittings are in excellent condition. The belt is complete with all the original components.
