Pair of percussion dueling/target pistols signed J. G. Syms 44 Chatham St. New York marked on both lock and barrels. 17-7/8” overall with 11” slightly heavyweight barrels of .50 caliber smooth bore. The pistols are half-stocked with adjustable set triggers, engraved iron scroll triggerguards, wood stocks with German silver mounts and inlays. The barrels show 30-40% original brown drifting to patina in grey. Some marks, scratches, erosion and pinprick pitting just starting. The locks show 30-50% case hardening. One hammer shows an old repair at the top. The stocks are good with some age checks and one or two cracks, some small storage marks, nicks, scratches, mostly in the varnish. The checkering is still good. The butts are inlaid with German silver engraved shields. There is a large stag head inlaid into each wrist at the top that are nicely engraved. The balance of the German silver is also engraved and the iron triggerguards are engraved in simple florals of vignettes of birds on the guards. A good looking pair of American pistols, circa approx. 1850’s. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $3,000 - $6,000
