Pair of percussion dueling pistols by W&G chance, London. Engraved on barrels “Imported by Gilland and Hayden Charleston, SC”. The pair measure approx. 15-3/8” overall with 9-1/8” heavyweight octagon barrel with semi-false muzzles. The pair are half stocked, checkered at the wrist, with adjustable single set triggers. Engraved iron triggerguards with engraved locks and mounts. Checkered at the wrist. They show German silver barrel key escutcheons and trim. The barrels show traces of original brown going to a grey patina. The locks show considerable case hardening drifting to a grayish patina but still some color mixed in. There is some scattered erosion and pinprick pitting, metal surfaces are generally good to very good with good crisp engraving and well-defined importer’s engraved address on barrel. The stocks are good to very good with still sharp checkering with some dings, scratches, mars and dents, slight compression cracks, but generally good overall. Original to the period German silver tipped ramrods. Actions good. This southern importer’s mark is seldom seen and pairs are exceedingly scarce. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $4,000 - $8,000
