Pair of ornate wheellock pistols showing elaborately inlaid stocks in Germanic style measuring 26 ½” overall with 18 ¼” barrels of .60 caliber smoothbore. The pair have fully working mechanisms with all inner parts and chain intact. In our opinion these were originally military pistols circa about 1620 to 1650 that were engraved and restocked during the Victorian era probably by Spitzer. The quality of the inlay is excellent with running dogs, game animals, scrolls, dots and 17th centuries style Germanic motifs that are finally executed and precisely accomplished. The quality of the inlay and overall restocking is much better than normally found by this armorer who restored and embellished antiquearms and armor more than 100 years ago for the great castles and halls of Europe. The condition is very good plus with just some minor erosion and slight pitting on the metal and some light cleaning. The stocks are very good plus to nearfine with almost all of their 19th century inlay intact. The inlay itself is cow bone and polished staghorn which is correct for the Wheelock era. Often Spitzer’s work is sold for original and this pair is among the most ornate and authentic in
