Pair of massive dueling pistols signed “Wilmot, Boston” circa approx. 1845. .52 caliber smoothbore, 11” heavy octagon barrels, 17-1/2” overall, with iron mounts, of large proportions, with iron belt hooks. The barrels show 30-50% of their deep tobacco brown finish, with light to moderate scattered erosion and surface pitting. The iron reinforced backstraps, locks, hammers and breeches, show medium to slightly heavy pitting and scaling. One hammer has been repaired and shows an enamel or blackened finish, probably when repaired. The stocks show some small cracks, dings, mars, and normal wear. The triggerguards are interestingly offset for right and left hand. The stocks are fair to good and show some small losses at the edges. Original to the period brass-tipped wooden ramrods are included and the belt hooks are also original to the period. These pistols have seen exposure to the elements, possibly carried to sea and are a very big pair. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $3,000 - $6,000
