Pair of high quality percussion dueling pistols signed Joseph Cooper, NY, in fancy original fitted case with accessories. The pair are pictured in The Code of Honor: Dueling in America by Ellen N. Murry, which features the collection of Col. Orbello, page 19, bottom illustration, where it is stated they reflect superb craftsmanship and many of Cooper’s weapons were sold by St. Louis gun dealers. An original label remains in center portion of lid, which reads, “Silver Plated Plates for Churches, Steamboats, Etc, Engraved to order. Moderate prices. Bolen, Engraver and printer, 104 Broadway, between Wall and Pine Streets. Also Rogers Cutlery, warranted pen knives, razors, scissors, etc. Dressing cases. A handsome assortment of fancy good. Patent repeating rifles of new construction (possibly Pattersons?), fish rods, reels, and a general assortment of tackle.” The label measures 1-3/8” by 4-1/2”. Bolen didn’t miss a trick. The pistols measure approx. 15-1/ overall with 9-1/4” medium to heavy weight octagon barrels of .56 caliber smoothbore. Half stocked, German silver mounts, with fancy engraved plate inlaid into butt.
