Pair of high quality American percussion dueling pistols by P. Valleé, Philadelphia. .59 caliber smoothbore, 9-1/2” medium to heavy weight barrels, 15-1/4” overall, cased with accessories. The owner’s plaque in lid is period inscribed “H. Pratt McKean, Phila”. McKean was the grandson of Thomas McKean, signer of the Declaration of Independence. The pair show browned barrels with lightening stripes. Case hardened locks, blued mounts, richly half stocked in deluxe burl walnut with checkered grip, rounded saw-type handle with rounded butt, adjustable set triggers. The pistols shows 30-50% original brown and striping on the barrels with some light cleaning and scattered erosion and pinprick pitting. The locks show 30 to 40% case hardening, one hammer has been repaired by a gunsmith long ago where the top spur was cracked. The triggerguards show 80-90% bright fire blue robin’s egg finish as do the rear ramrod thimbles. The forend caps are dark horn. The pistols are generally very good plus condition. Both actions are working. The pair are contained within their original to the period green velveteen-lined partition style case. The case is in very good condition with just slight at contact
