Pair of flintlock “Kentucky”/Dueling pistols by J&L Gilston of Lexington, Kentucky, converted from flintlock to percussion approx. 1800-1820. The pair measure approx. 16-5/8” overall with nearly 11” medium to heavy octagon barrels of approx. .52 caliber smoothbore. Half-stocked with checkered wrists in naturally striped American wood with nicely engraved iron triggerguard, silver escutcheons around barrel key, and escutcheon around lock screw, and large silver plaque at wrist just behind tang. The maker’s name is nicely engraved in script upon a maker’s inlay on the breech. The pistols show an American type conversion to percussion with plain unengraved hammers. The pair remain in very good condition showing a light grey to brown patina finish, good to very good stocks showing just some normal wear, carry, and use. The pistols retain original to the period ramrods and have a very nice overall appearance with unusually good quality engraving on the triggerguards which show stylized ducks in a pond and very large engraved pineapple finials. The stocks retain 75-85% of their original varnish, sharp checkering, just some minor scratches, mars, minor dings. Provenance: Red
