Pair of early to mid 18th century flintlock horseman’s pistols with chiseled steel and engraved decorations. .58 caliber smoothbore, 20” overall, 12-1/2” barrels, full stocked to muzzles. The pair are unsigned and show good quality chiseled barrels with stands of arms and nobles at center panels, the rear of each lock also chiseled in relief and screw covers on hammers show ancient Greek man’s head, similar to ancient coins. The pierced sideplates are secured by two screws and show a nicely engraved serpent with man’s face and nose. The buttcaps are faceted and engraved, the finials on triggerguards and ramrod ports show leaf designs and the ferrules show faceting and lined trim. The pistols are nicely raised carved and moulded around the metal and are of high-quality walnut with a good grain. The metal surfaces are slightly rubbed and now drifted back to patina with some scattered erosion and pinprick pitting. The stocks are very good plus with some small losses, slight wear, a couple of stress type cracks but at least very good overall. Old original to the period wood ramrods are included. There is some dried wax and oil on the mounts, just normal aging. A big and impressive
