Pair of Victorian era Wheelock style pistols, probably by Spitzer, with ball butts, extensive scrimshawed ivory inlays, in the 17th century Germanic style. The pistols measure 24-1/2” overall with 15-1/4” barrels, the locks show simulated proofs on each top edge. The stocks are ornately inlaid with serpents and scrolls with floral and dot accents that are nicely scrimshawed. The metal shows some light pitting and erosion, the stocks are of a light colored fruit wood and are very good with several small inlays expertly replaced, some damage and repair to one stock, but generally very good overall with most extensive and intricate inlay wehave seen on a 19th century pair. The locks have no internal mechanisms and were made only as show pieces during the Victorian era where firms like Spitzer created arms and armor to redecorate the castles and halls ofEurope as arms and armor were rare even 150 years ago. This is an exceptional pair for their type. Est: $7,500 - $15,000
