Pair of English flintlock dueling pistols marked Sykes, Oxford remaining in original fine to near excellent condition with their proper case. The pistols measure 14” overall with 8” octagon barrels of approximately .62 caliber smoothbore. The barrels show most of their original brown finish and at least 80% original striping with just some minor erosion and pitting. The trigger guards show 80% to 90% original blue finish with crisp engraving and just beginning normal age also the rear ramrod ferrules show about 90% original blue. The locks show grayish original case hardening with some light erosion and just beginning normal age. The pistols show high quality waterproof pans and rollers on the frizzen with nicely sculptured swan neck hammers in an elegant form. The locks retain all of their original parts. The pistols show platinum lined pans and are banded at the breech. The stocks are in very good plus to near fine condition with sharp checkering just some minor storage and handling type marks. The tang show fine engraving and most of their original grayish case hardening. The barrel escutcheon is silver and the forend Is horn. The pistols are equipped with set triggers and retain brass tipped ramrod’s with worms that are probably the originals. The pair are contained within their original casing with authentic lining. The lining is a green baize or felt and remains in very good condition with just slight fraying, normal impressions and aging. A correct size mold is included also a driving rod is retained and a flask also marked by Sykes showing about 80% original lacquer. The compartment covers are original with brass pulls. The exterior of the case is veneered hardwood probably mahogany and remains in very good plus condition with just a few storage marks and normal aging. The case shows correct hook type latches and brass hardware. Sets of flintlock dueling pistols have escalated in price and nearly disappeared from the worlds collector market. Est.: $14,000- $28,000.
