Pair of American flintlock dueling pistols signed Miles, Philadelphia. The pair measure 16” overall with 10-1/2” barrels of approx. .62 caliber smoothbore. Half stocked in high quality walnut with checkered butts, spurred iron guards, silver forend caps and escutcheons, set triggers, gold inlaid maker’s name and proofs, and gold plated front sights. The pair show a v-notch type sight at each breech area. The pistols have been professionally reconverted to flintlock and one pistol has been badly broken at the wrist and shows an old iron strap type repair at the wrist and left side of stock. Both stocks show extensive wood repairs. The metal surfaces show some pitting and erosion. The pair retain original to the period bone/ivory tipped ramrods. Pistols by this scarce Philadelphia maker are rarely encountered and as a point of interest John Miles contracted with the state of Virginia for 250 pistols in about 1801 making him one of the earliest American makers. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $7,500 - $15,000
