Pair of American flintlock dueling pistols by B&J Cooper, New York, cased with accessories showing maker’s trade label in lid, circa approx. 1810. Illustrated Code of Honor: Dueling in America by Ellen N. Murry, page 25. The pistols measure 16” overall, with 9-3/8” heavy octagon barrels of approx. .62 caliber smooth bore. The pistols are half-stocked with saw-handle type grip, rounded and spiral carved butts, and are of select walnut, crisply checkered. The pistols show double gold-banding at the breech, gold maker’s cartouches that are inscribed B&J Cooper at breech and center portion of lock, also gold lining around touch holes. The pistols show a grey patina finish on the barrels, some scattered light to moderate rust and erosion and traces of Damascus pattern. The locks show considerable traces of case hardening going to grey. One shows some light cleaning. The pistols are in their original flintlock configuration and one top jaw and screw are excellent replacements. The stocks are very good plus to near fine condition showing just some minor age, cracks, small mars, slight imperfection, very crisp checkering.
