Pair of American dueling/target pistols .36 caliber, by Wurfflein, Philadelphia, PA. Circa approx. 1835. In fine to excellent condition, cased with accessories, as shown in The Code of Honor: Dueling in America by Ellen N. Murry, which features the collection of Col. Orbelo, page 19, top illustration. The pair measure approx. 17-1/4” overall with 9-7/8” octagon barrels of medium to heavy weight, half stocked, fancy German silver mounts with scroll triggerguards, brown barrels, case hardened locks/mounts, nicely checkered and formed select walnut stocks with adjustable set triggers. The pair are signed both on locks and barrels, and the pistols show 95-98% bright original tobacco brown finish with 90-95% original case hardening on locks, hammers, tangs, and breeches. The pistols show virtually no use and no evidence of firing and are very near excellent overall. The pistols are gold banded at the breech. The mounts are nicely engraved in florals. The screws also engraved. The varnished wood stocks are of select walnut and show 90-95% of their original varnish, some slight dings and mars, storage marks, excellent overall with at least 90-95% varnish.
