Pair of 17th-century Saxon style wheellock pistols made in the Victorian era with gold gilted locks and barrels with matching mounts. This pair is finely inlaid in the Germanic style using bone and polished staghorn. The pair measure nearly 23”overall with 14” barrels in .60 smoothbore. There are no mechanisms within the lock plates and they were never made to shoot but purely as decorations. Spitzer of Germany and several other European firms re-created early arms and armor toredecorate the great halls and castles of Europe during the 19th century. This is an exceptional quality Victorian era pair as the inlay is as good or better than most 17th-century wheellock. Also they are unusual to find with ball butts asVictorian arms are usually thinner. This pair remains in good to very good condition with some small areas of minor damage and a few inlays replaced. The wood shows some small losses but generally very good overall. Victorian arms andarmor are rapidly rising in value and the workmanship in the 19th century was relatively inexpensive compared to today’s master gunsmith rates. An American master gunsmith recently recreated an inlaid matchlock long arm in the 16th
