Outstanding cased “mule-ear” take-down percussion rifle by W. Gardner, Geneva, New York. 32-1/8” light weight octagon barrel of .31 caliber rifled bore, nearly 47” overall. Stocked in select burl walnut with silver mounts. Double barrel keys, with three gold bands at breech. The rifle is signed both at breech and on lock and shows 75-85% original brown on barrel, some just beginning light erosion and aging. The lock shows grey case hardening and is sharp and crisp. The rifle shows finest quality workmanship through. Fine engraving on the lock. Gold plaque inlaid at wrist for owner’s initials. There is an excellent repair to the wood around the lock that is almost unnoticeable and is a replacement of the original piece. The gun weighs only 4.75lbs and is the lightest weight and highest quality mule-ear we have ever cataloged. The rifle is in its original to the period velveteen lined partition style case and shows three rods, breech tool, two screwdrivers, mold, flask, and cap tins. The case is of superior quality and fine condition. The exterior of the case shows a beveled lid similar to Paterson cases and is inlaid with veneer burl wood at the top. Geneva New York is located
