Outstanding U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle with Bayonet
This is an example of a Model 1884 rifle with a Buffington rear sight and a hooded blade front sight. The barrel, hammer, lock, trigger guard and buttplate are blue with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. The eagle/ shield motif is marked ahead of the hammer followed by "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD". The top of the breechblock is marked "US / Model / 1884". The left side of the barrel is stamped with the "V, P, Eagle head and P" proof and inspection marks. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked with the letter "A". Three click hammer tumbler, two piece trigger guard, grooved trigger, sling and stacking swivel, and iron ramrod. The stock has a clear letter "W" and a circled script "P" behind the trigger guard. The left side of the wrist has a script SWP cartouche with an illegible date. The buttplate tang is marked "US". Complete with a leather sling and a "US" marked socket bayonet with scabbard. The leather frog is marked "ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL" and "J.F.S."

Condition: Very fine. The barrel, trigger guard and barrel bands retain 95% original blue finish with some minor thinning and some light spotting (mostly on the barrel). The buttplate retains 60% of the blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The breechblock and upper tang retain 90% of the faded original case colors. The stock is fine as reoiled with the cartouche date obliterated, some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is excellent with much of the blue finish remaining with some scattered minor spotting. The scabbard retains 70% blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina with some minor spotting.
