This is a fantastic example of a very desirable special order deluxe Stevens Ideal "Schuetzen" Model 51 single shot rifle that comes with two factory fitted target barrels. This model of rifle was basically an up-graded, deluxe version of the standard Stevens Walnut Hill target rifle that was produced from 1896-1916, however with this being a two-barrel set it most certainly had to be a special order rifle. This model was specifically equipped as standard with the following features: scroll engraved receiver, double set triggers, straight grip, pot-belly style stock, with deluxe checkering on the walnut stock , with two-matching forends, one for each barrel. The stock has also been fitted with a heavy, color case hardened double prong Schuetzen buttplate. This rifle was also special ordered with the large three-finger spur, loading lever. The two barrels are of a different barrel weight,, with the 22LR barrel being of a medium weight (like a Winchester Number 3) with the second barrel, in 32 Ideal being of a slightly heavier weight, (like a Winchester number 3 1/2 of 4), with both in a half round/half octagon pattern. Both barrels are fitted with the Stevens globe target type front sight with no provisions for a rear sight, but rare fitted with factory mounted scope bases. The upper receiver tang has been fitted with a unmarked mid-range vernier peep sight, that has an adjustable Hadley style eye cup. These were built in a variety of calibers in both centerfire and rimfire, with this specific rifle being built on the 44 1/2 action to handle both the rim and center fire cartridges. The tops right side of both the barrels are marked in two lines: "J. Steven A&T CO./CHICOPEE FALLS MASS. PAT. OCT 29. 89" and on the left side of each barrel it is marked with its respective caliber: "22-LR and 32 Ideal" . The underside of each barrel is correctly serial numbered (12771) to match the receiver and the rear end of each forend is also correctly stamped with the last three digits of the serial number (771). The underside of the front area of the trigger group/tang area is stamped "51" identifying the specific type of rifle. Both sides of the receiver have large scroll engraved pattern with additional scroll engraving on the flats of the receiver. As noted this rifle has a select grade of walnut for the buttstock and both forend, and all three pieces have a very nice fine checkered pattern. Also included with the rifle are the following accessories: 1) 41 caliber gang mold, brass construction with 12 conical chambers, marked "4" on one end. 2) 45 caliber gang mold, brass, 12 conical chambers, marked "UC 9676" on the underside. With box. 3) Nine rounds of Western 45 Colt ammunition, in shipping box. 4) Wooden shooting case, containing 124 empty casings, 3 cap tins, a Windgate rifle front sight and assorted small tools. 5) Metal cased shooting kit for a Stevens Model 51 rifle in 32 Ideal caliber, including an unidentified Ideal brand loading tool, 50 casings, a sealed box of UMC 32 Ideal cartridges (labeled "SPECIAL"), a Stevens breechblock, a manual bullet seater, 32 bullet mold, bench clamp, two St. Louis Shooten scorecards and a Marlin cartridge loading multitool.
