This is a very nice example of the unique and highly desirable Springfield Model 1855 Pistol Carbine with attachable stock. The pistol carbine features the Maynard self-priming device, a swivel ramrod with button head, clean out screw on the nipple bolster and a two leaf folding rear sight graduated to 400 yards. Springfield Armory manufactured 4,021 pistol carbines between 1855 and 1857. The Model 1855 Pistol Carbine was widely issued to the U.S. dragoon and cavalry regiments prior to 1861and remained in limited service during the first years of the Civil War. The pistol-carbine has a "National Armory Bright" iron barrel, ramrod, lock plate and back strap. The pistol and stock mountings are all brass. The door of the Maynard magazine is stamped with the Springfield eagle and shield. The lock is dated "1855" behind the hammer and marked: "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the primer magazine. The barrel tang is dated "1855" and the left barrel flat has the "V/P/eaglehead" proof and inspection marks. The butt cap is numbered "5" and the attachable stock is numbered "5". The stock buttplate is marked "U.S." ahead of the buttplate screw. Accompanied by the original brown leather sling.

Condition: Excellent, exhibiting the original "Armory Bright" finish on the barrel, ramrod, lock plate, and back strap with only a few isolated patches of shallow pin point pitting. Markings are all excellent; sharp and clear. The brass hardware is crisp and is an attractive aged mustard yellow patina. The wood has had a protective coat of varnish applied some time ago and is excellent, with a clear cartouche on the left side of the stock. All edges of the wood are sharp and exhibit only the slight pressure marks from storage. Buttstock is also very fine. The sling remains in excellent condition for its age showing appropriate age cracks and wear. Mechanically excellent. This is an exceptional U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Pistol Carbine that would truly be hard to improve upon.
