Outstanding Rare Pre-64 Winchester Transition Model 70 Bolt Action Carbine in Desirable 22 Hornet
This is an example of a Model 70 carbine in the desirable 22 Hornet caliber that was manufactured in January 1948 during the Transition period. The Transition period extends from late 1945 to 1951, a period which saw an increase in yearly production to satisfy the growing demand for the Model 70. The carbine is equipped with a ramp front sight (hood missing), a buckhorn rear sight, and a receiver drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Standard markings including the single factory proofs on the barrel and receiver. Transition safety, polished bolt, and hinged floor plate. Checkered pistol grip stock with sling swivels and checkered steel buttplate.
BBL: 20 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 22 hornet
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 78831
Condition: Excellent. The carbine retains 97% original blue finish with some minor muzzle wear, some speckling of gray, and some minor edge wear with the finish beginning to thin on the floor plate and trigger guard. The stock is very fine with some trimming of wood on top left side (where receiver sight one was), and numerous minor dings, with most of the varnish remaining. Overall the checkering is crisp. A very rare Model 70 Carbine in this very scarce 22 Hornet cartridge. Mechanically excellent.
