A) Approximately 1,500 to 2,000 of these automatic revolving cylinder type revolvers were manufactured from 1857 to 1861 with very few engraved. The top strap is marked "MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS". The primer door is marked "MAYNARD'S PATENT / SEP. 22. 1845" in a circle surrounded by scroll engraving, "NOV. 26. 1850" on the front of the barrel latch and "PATENT / JAN. 2, 1855" on the backstrap. The bottom of the barrel and arbor pin are marked "501", the inside of the top strap "814" and the left side of the frame under the primer door and grip, and the inside of the primer door "90". Broad leaf floral scroll engraved frame and primer door, with a zigzag border on the backstrap, and floral etched cylinder. All niter blue finish with brass trigger guard, brass post front sight and fitted with smooth two piece pearl grips.

Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 90% plus original bright blue finish mainly concentrated on the barrel and cylinder. The balance has a smooth silver gray patina. The trigger guard has 60% original gold remaining with the balance an attractively aged patina. The grips are excellent with only light handling marks and a couple mild dings. The markings and engraving are crisp and clear. Mechanically fine.

Described in A with the bottom of the barrel, top strap and arbor pin numbered "492" and the left side of the frame under the primer door and grip, both grip panels and inside the primer door numbered "88".

Condition: Very fine. The barrel retains 70% original bright blue finish with some pitting. The balance has a smooth gray patina. The trigger guard has 80% original gold with the balance an attractive patina. The grips are also very fine with a few minor dings, chips and handling marks. The engraving and markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent.
