This exceptional Volcanic No. 2 Navy Lever-Action Pistol was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., between 1857 and 1860. The New Haven Arms Co., manufactured an estimated 300 No. 2. Navy pistols. The pistol features the large "Navy" brass frame, blued six-inch barrel with integral magazine, case-hardened hammer, blued loading lever with finger hole and two-piece, varnished, walnut grips. A brass cone front sight is mounted on the barrel and a fixed rear sight is mounted in the receiver dovetail. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "PATENT FEB 14. 1854/NEW HAVEN CONN." in two lines. Oliver Winchester utilized this abbreviated marking after his reorganization of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in April 1857. The serial number, "2471" is located on the left side of the loading lever, the lower right side of the frame underneath the grips, and on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. The innovative Volcanic lever-action, integral, spring-loaded magazine and self-contained cartridge, were a critical step in the development of repeating firearms. Closely associated with both Smith & Wesson and Winchester, Volcanic lever action pistols and carbines are among the most important 19th Century American firearm designs.
