Outstanding Factory Documented Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Rifle with Set-Trigger
This excellent Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Rifle has letters from the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and the Cody Firearms Museum. The letters state that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on January 12, 1885, and described it as "Rifle, 40/60, Octagon barrel, Set trigger". The Third Model 1886 Rifle has an integral dust cover guide rail and dust cover with serrated rear edge. The 28-inch octagon barrel, full-length magazine, forearm cap and receiver have a blue finish. The dust cover, bolt, loading gate and trigger are a fiery niter blue. The hammer, loading lever and crescent steel buttplate are color casehardened. The straight grain walnut stock and forearm have a varnished finish. The barrel is fitted with a nickel-silver, blade, front sight and adjustable, folding leaf rear sight. The crescent steel buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." ahead of the rear sight. "CAL. 40-60" is roll stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator is inscribed with the caliber designation "40-60". The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "{MODEL. 1876.}" in fancy letters with foliate decorations at either end. The serial number, "42639" is stamped on the lower tang behind the loading lever latch.
