Outstanding Factory Documented Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Sporting Rifle in 45-90
This exceptional Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle is documented with a Cody Firearms Museum letter. The Cody letter states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on August 8, 1893. The letter describes the rifle as caliber .45/90, with octagon barrel, set trigger, Lyman sights, shotgun butt, and 'sling and swivel'. The rifle has a 26-inch, full octagon, barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel is fitted with a Lyman "Winchester Express" front sight with ivory bead and Lyman patent markings and a sporting style rear sight. A Lyman folding "Combination Tang Peep Sight" with "Pat. Jan. 29/79" markings is fitted to the receiver tang. The rifle has a special order single set-trigger and special order sling swivels on the stock and forearm cap. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, "Fancy Grain", walnut with a high polish 'piano finish'. The forearm and stock pistol grip have "Style H" checkered panels. The stock has an ebony insert in the pistol grip and a blued shotgun buttplate. The barrel, magazine tube, loading gate, bolt and trigger are blued. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and loading lever have a color case-hardened finish. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "- MANUFACTURED BY THE - / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN.U.S.A. - " ahead of the rear sight. The caliber, "45-90 W.C.F." is roll stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The lower receiver tang is marked: "PAT.OCT.14.1884. / JAN.20.1885" in two lines followed by the serial number "83421".

Serial Number: 83421
Condition: Excellent. The rifle retains 98% of the original blue and 95% plus case-hardened finish. The blue finish on the barrel and magazine shows minimal wear. The receiver, hammer, loading gate and forearm cap have vivid case colors. The small amount of handling wear is concentrated on the buttplate which retains 75% of the original blue finish. The barrel markings are crisp. The bore is bright. The high figured stock and forearm have nearly all of the original, high polish, 'piano' finish. The fine checkering on the stock and pistol grip is sharp. Wear is limited to some minor, scattered handling and storage marks. The left side of the stock is un-obtrusively stamped with a small "Broad Arrow/T" in an oval and the number "1656"; the significance of these markings is unknown. This is an excellent example of a documented Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with special order set-trigger, sling swivels and shotgun buttplate.
