This is an exceptional original example of a Confederate Model 1855 Percussion rifle that was manufactured at the former Federal Arsenal in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1864. The rifle was manufactured using some of the U.S. 1855 rifle machinery captured from the U.S. Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, and has the same general configuration as the U.S. Model 1855 rifle. This ''Type IV" rifle has the late style lock plate that lacks the ''humpback'' profile of ''Type I'' and ''Type II'' Fayetteville rifles, the distinctive "S" shaped hammer, brass buttplate, trigger guard, barrel bands, and forearm cap, folding two-leaf rear sight and straight shank, tulip head, ramrod. The front sight serves a lug for a socket bayonet. The oil finished walnut stock lacks the brass patch box found on some ''Type I'' rifles. The lock plate is dated "1864" behind the hammer and stamped with the federal style Eagle and shield device above "C,S,A," and followed by "FAYETTEVILLE" in front of the hammer. "C.S.A." is stamped on the buttplate tang. "V/P/Eagle head" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel near the breech. The right side of both barrel bands is stamped "U" facing the muzzle of the barrel. The rifle is complete with a type Confederate issue sling made of rough, folded and sewn cotton with leather keepers and reinforcements and an iron wire hook. A note that this rifle was purchased from Chuck Foster in 1998 whom stated is was captured on the battlefield by a Federal soldier during the Civil War.

Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very good. The rifle is all original and is in outstanding condition for a Confederate made weapon. The barrel has a deep, untouched, brown patina. There is heavy flash pitting on the breech and bolster but the inspection marks on the left side of the barrel are clear. The rear sight has moderate to heavy pitting and the bolster screw is broken. The hammer and lock plate have a brown patina; traces of case colors are visible on the lock plate. The lock plate markings are crisp. The brass furniture, has a dark, untouched age patina and has never been polished. The markings on the barrel bands and buttplate are crisp. The stock is in very good condition. The stock shows moderate use with scattered handling marks. The ramrod has the same dark patina as the barrel and appears to be original to the rifle. The scarce, Confederate made, sling is clean and in very good overall condition. This is an outstanding example of one of the most attractive Confederate made weapons.
