This is an authentic 19th Century beaded pipe bag with pipe from Osage American Indian Chief Fred Lookout. The piece was purchased from Bonham’s Auction House 40 years ago by the current collectors family where it has been displayed since. The lot includes an outstanding whimsically beaded pipe tobacco bag dating to the 19th Century and a later early 1900 elbow catlinite pipe with wood stem and wood tamper. The set was owned and used by Osage Chief Fred Lookout (1865-1949). Chief Lookout was one of the leaders of the Osage people and was born near Independence, Kansas. Lookout entered tribal politics in 1908 when he was elected as assistant principal chief and then later appointed the principal chief by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior Walter L. Fisher, replacing Bacon Rind. He served as the principal Chief of the Osage Nation for most of the rest of his life until his death in 1949. The bag shows an Indian tanned hide construction having a fantastic pattern of three panels sewn together with an artful hand cut long fringe accent down each of the three seems. Each of the three sides shows excellent whimsical geometric beadwork with all early circa 1800’s period correct glass trade seed beads of greasy yellow, butterscotch, chalk white, cobalt, semi-transparent red, semi-transparent green, sky padre blue, medium green and Cheyenne pink in designs such as a five-pointed star, flower, blossoms and possibly corn. The top of the bag shows the original tie straps and an old collection museum tag which states, “Osage Chief Lookout Pipe & Pipe Bag”. The pipe shows a pipestone catlinite elbow design which has been nicely hand carved and has a good rich smoked patina. Along with the pipe is a possibly later added short wood pipe stem which shows an old original gasket at the pipe connection and burnt finish, a truly artistic and ceremonial addition. Along with the pipe is an original wood pipe tamper. Provenance: From the private family collection of Sarah Alling of Helena, Montana. The piece was purchased by her family at Bonham’s Auction House over 40 years ago. The family collection of Sarah Alling, a 5th Generation Montanan, began in the 19th Century and has grown since. Along with being an avid collector herself, Sarah co-founded with Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Fine Art of Bozeman, Montana which was both part museum and gallery. The bag measures 15”L with an additional 6”L of fringe by 7”W x 7”D. Comes on a display which was created by Sarah Alling’s father, the original purchaser.
