Ornate Three Barrel Percussion Pepperbox Pistol
Fancy, ornate, unusual three-barrel percussion pepperbox pistol. Possibly a prototype or experimental model, this example has a most unusual mechanism in which the barrel release on the left side of the frame is pulled rearward while the pistol is on half cock at which point the barrels can be manually rotated and “click” into locked battery (the release lever snaps forward). Approximately .30 caliber and all steel barrels, frame and grip straps. The center hung hammer has a half cock and full cock. To fire the pistol, the hammer is brought to full cock and then held further with the thumb as a second safety, then the trigger is pulled and the hammer released. The dark wood grips are brass wire
inlayed in a fleur-de-lis pattern with two pearl inlays on each side. The butt retains a lanyard ring. Overall shows great age. As there are no proof marks or maker’s marks, the origin of this unusual pistol is unknown but will date to the c.1840-1860 period when multi-barreled percussion pepperbox pistols were popular. A most intriguing firearm with a unique mechanism! The pistol weighs 1lbs 4oz. No Serial Number. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
