Ornate German Wheelock rifle circa about 1620 to 1660 signed Elias Schintzl, Berlin. The rifle measures approximately 40 ½” overall with 29 ½” standard weight octagon barrel in approximately .69 caliber rifled. The stock is fully and finally inlaid in polished staghorn showing scrimshawed decoration in a germanic hunting scene motif and is very finely executed and intricate. The stock is in exceptional condition and near fine with just slight imperfections and normal aging. There are a few marks and some miniscule losses, slight repairs, and etc. in the wood. The metal has been cleaned to bright in European Museum tradition but not rubbed out and markings and edges are sharp. There are a few small replacements of inlays that are nicely matched and inlays are 98% to 99% plus intact and original to the period of manufacture. Inlaid Wheelock’s of this quality with ornate decoration have been actively collected for over 100 years and are in foundations and museums along with a few high-end private collections. Rarely offered. Est.: $20,000-$40,000.
