Ornate 12 Gauge French Hammer Double Barrel Shotgun, by Mathes Freres. Serial no. 1877. 12 gauge. 281/2 inch Bernard Damascus barrels with a smooth concave rib with a gold inlay of Mathes Freres signature. Fully engraved French gray bar action with rebounding bar action locks. Engraving is game scenes with ornate floral design with a matted background. Game scenes include dogs (pointer and setter), Red deer stag and Roe deer. Underside of action marked: EXPtion Universelle de 1878 in gold. Highly engraved high hammers, percussion fences, triggerguard with scroll support at front. Finely checkered straight grip stock of figured walnut, checkered butt with engraved heel and toe plates. Front sling swivel; missing rear. Finely checkered fore-end is fixed to action. Barrels are released with a Mathes patent push-button release. Data: Barrel Dimensions: Bores: 0,730/0.730 inches. Chambers: 2 ½ inches. Chokes: 0.00 inches (Cylinder). Minimum Wall thickness: 0.032 inches. Proof: French Black Powder, French 1898 Semi-smokeless proof ( Not standard Nitro Proof). Stock Dimensions: Pull: 15 inches. Drop at comb: 1 ½ inches. Drop at heel: 2 inches. Cast: None. Weight: 7 pounds 6 ounces. Condition: Very Good, as partially redone. Left barrel shows a dent at the muzzle. Right barrel shows a number of very light dents on the side. Barrels show 60-70% finish with extensive spotting and light corrosion. Bores show areas of very light pitting. Hammers show looseness on the locks. Action and barrels show looseness. Refinished stock shows some nicks, scratches and brush marks. Heel and toe caps are proud of the stock. Fore-end shows bruising to checkering and a significant loss.
