Original to the mid-19th-century hand colored print by Currier & Ives entitled “The Last War Whoop” and showing a frontiersman holding his rifle and 1851 Colt pistol on horseback bearing witness to an American Indian Warriors last chant of defiance. The print measures approximately 22” x 29” and remains in very good condition and still colorful with just slight normal aging and staining. The print is contained within a 19th century frame and possibly the original. The left side of the border is marked with a printed by A.F. Tait. The center is marked “Entered according to act of Congress etc. 1856” and the right corner Lith (Lithographer) of N. Currier New York. The lower right edge of the artwork is signed in the block but we cannot read the signature. This print was displayed in the office of a prominent antique and arms dealer in Bridgewater, Connecticut who has owned it for nearly 40 years and never could find a reference on this rare and early Western frontier Indian scene. Est.: $1,500-$3,000.
