Original Travis Stewart Cowboy Trailing Painting
Featured in this lot is an original Travis Stewart painting titled, "Cowboy Trailing" done in 1985. Clovis, California is where Travis Stewart was raised. He creates all of his western and horse-related themes from the bottom of his heart. Travis' father, who is active in the Clovis Rodeo Association, exposed him to horses when he was a young child. As a young child, Travis developed a passion for drawing and frequently drew baseball players, horses, and other subjects that caught his attention. Travis accepted a position leading pack trips at the High Sierra Pack Station in an effort to advance his horsemanship skills. His desire to make horses a bigger and bigger part of his life was fueled by spending the summer months with horses, mules, and influential people. Travis was accepted to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, after graduating from high school. Travis was able to spread his name and resume throughout the equine industry during this time. He was given the chance to work for several of the top trainers in the Reined Cow Horse sector not long after graduating. After studying under these instructors for some time and looking for new career opportunities, Travis accepted a position with the Black Rock Ranch in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. After having an accident with a 2-year-old filly that prevented him from riding, Travis underwent surgery in the spring of 2010. He picked up his pencil again while waiting for his injury to heal. He started drawing sparingly to see if he still had his artistic abilities and was shocked to discover that his hand and eye were cooperating and that his abilities had somehow advanced. It is thought that part of the reason Travis was able to return to his artwork with such ease was because the growth he underwent gave him a greater understanding and appreciation of the horse. Travis aspires to captivate his audience with something original and stirring. He hopes that by sharing his drawings, not only will he be able to share his story, but the stories of others who share his appreciation for horses. Inspiration for Travis has come from various others like: Charles Russell, Will James, and even Norman Rockwell. A most influential artist is also Robert “Shoofly” Shufelt. Travis currently resides in Burleson, Texas. The painting shows a cowboy on horseback leading three other horses with no riders behind him. He is riding though a desert area with large rock formations all around him. The painting shows amazing attention to detail in the landscape and horses. It also shows the horses' reflections in the water of the small creek they are crossing. The painting is set in a large silver and gray frame featuring a gold colored plaque at the bottom reading, "T. Stewart 'Cowboy Trailing' c. 1985". In the bottom left hand corner of the painting is the artist's signature reading, "T. Stewart". The painting and frame show good condition overall with some slight wear to the frame but no signs of obvious damage are noted. The visible art measures 23 1/2" L x 35 1/2" W, while the entire piece measures 31" L x 43" W.*
