OUTSTANDING MASSIVE AMERICAN SILVER & IVORY

MOUNTED WAR OF 1812 SABER. This incredible silver mounted Philadelphia federal era saber has rare early American blue & gold decorated blade w/ unique design of large script “US of A” vertical on blade. There are a handful of swords known by this unknown Philadelphia swordsmith w/ same decorated blade motifs & hand chased repousse silver mounts, no two the same but having the same theme. Research one day no doubt will identify him. His products were made during or just before the war of 1812, as there are at least 2 identified War of 1812 used examples. (see attached file) This sword is pictured and described in Dan Hartzler’s 2015 text “American Silver Hilted, Revolutionary & Early Federal Swords”. Hartzler describes this sword & another by the same unknown maker as “the ultimate”. “The features of the hilt, grip & scabbard revealed a heavy influence of sophistication” the oversized hilt has bird’s head pommel, checkered ivory grip, languet w/ spread wing eagle, engraved quillon & ferrule. Scabbard is mounted w/ 3 oversized sheet silver mounts w/ unique high relief repousse patriotic design, full standing Lady Liberty holding liberty cap on pole w/ panoply of flags in the background having an eagle flying above w/ wreath in its beak; stunning high relief panoply of arms w/ large spread wing eagle on cross cannons & the forward flag showing 8 pointed stars. The bottom mount is florally engraved w/ three dimensional snake utilized as blade of drag. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Pdf of Hartzler's 2015 text. CONDITION: very good overall, blade retains most of its original blue and gold decoration w/ scattered areas of staining. Scabbard is solid and silver mounts are fine as can be seen in photos w/ patina. (02-15950). $14,000-$20,000.
