This is an expertly carved raven totem bowl from the Pacific Northwest Coast American Indians of Canada from the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples and dates to circa early 1900. The bowl shows the signature of artist William Robertson a Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) artist from Kingcome Inlet, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada. William Robertson is a well renowned Northwest Coast traditional carver whose work is well collected and was also the father to Billy Robertson. William taught his son Billy, who was born in 1936, his craft. The bowl shows a traditional shape with raven totem figures on both sides having abalone inlaid eyes (totaling four) along with a finely incised carved ridge bordering the bowls edge which culminates into the large rectangular abalone inlaid shell at the bowls ends. The bowl is signed on the bottom, “WILLIAM ROBERTSON KINGCOME INLET”. The piece shows a very nice well-preserved condition with no major damage, or chips. Provenance: From the private family collection of Sarah Alling of Helena, Montana. The family collection of Sarah Alling, a 5th Generation Montanan, began in the 19th Century and has grown since. Along with being an avid collector herself, Sarah co-founded with Bruce VanLandingham Sundog Fine Art of Bozeman, Montana which was both part museum and gallery. Overall measures 16.75”L x 6”W x 4”H.
