The body is black felt with a patent leather top, peak and "V" shaped reinforcement strips. There is a large coiled bullion cord boss at the top above the plate. The plate has a silver "WR" cypher on a gilt background with a ribbon around it marked "NORTHUMBERLAND" and "NEWCASTLE" on a cut 8 point silver star with a laurel wreath over top of it. There is a gilt plume boss extending out of the top with a black feather plume without a ring. There are large ear bosses with a Victorian crown, are marked "NNVC" with a leaf and acorn border which suspend leather backed silver chin scales. There is a lion's head cap line boss on the upper right hand side through which a gold bullion cap line runs. With a set of silvered Northumberland and Newcastle Volunteer Cavalry epaulettes in an unmarked tin.

Condition: Very good, the body and patent leather show some wear and some crazing. The silver components show a dark aged patina. The gilt components show wear with some loss at the high edges. The gold bullion cord boss and cap line have dulled to a gray. The epaulettes are good with wear on the high edges, the bullion has faded and some are partially detached. The tin is very good with a textured black finish.
