The lot features a beaded and pheasant feather adorned breech clout from the Northern Plains Native American Indians dating to circa 1900. The piece shows a U.S. Tent or tipi trade canvas and Indian tanned hide construction with excellent early 1900 trade beads and has a plume of pheasant feathers being secured with a large abalone shell gorget. The feather plume also shows an early KC Baking Powder tin top, gilt tin pocket frame and a tobacco snuff tin advertising top tied on with Indian tanned hide beneath the large gorget. A large gorget banner of abalone of this size is truly a fantastic and rare addition. The belt shows an early saddle harness leather construction with trade clothe ties. The beadwork is displayed in an inverted “v” pattern and shows fantastic faceted Czechoslovakian glass in black, green red and blue. The pheasant feathers are all covered in Indian tanned hide and is adorned in red and blue feathers. The piece was originally adorned with plumes of American Bald Eagle feathers, a true attribute to the authenticity and age of the piece (the Eagle feathers have been removed and destroyed to abide by all laws). The piece would have been worn as a breech clout front skirt panel on a warrior as a ceremonial dance outfit. Provenance: From a large American Indian collection in Great Falls, Montana. The piece has an original museum collection tag that reads, “AES SS” and “B-15.67”. The piece is in well preserved condition. Measures overall 35.5”l X 28”w at the widest feather points.
