Offered for sale is this fine circa 1870’s beaded and porcupine quilled pipe bag from the Northern Cheyenne Native American Indians. The bag shows an Indian tanned hide sinew sewn construction with all 19th century period correct glass trade seed cen beads in a fine geometric pattern along with parfleche fringe being covered in porcupine quill quillwork with purple and green ocher mineral pigment dyes. The beadwork includes such colors of red white hearts, medium green, medium blue, chalk white, cobalt, black and petit faceted greasy rose. The bag shows some cracking in the hide and bead loss along with the bottom fringe being missing. The hide still has some suppleness and stiffness along with the majority of the quillwork and beadwork still being present and displaying very well. Provenance: From a historic Eastern Montana American Indian Collection, where the piece was found to be an authentic original, one of the finest collections of American Indian weaponry and antiquities in Montana. Measures 16”L by 4.5”.
