New York Engraved Colt Model 1877 Thunderer Ejectorless Etched Panel Double Action Revolver with Pearl Grips and Factory Letter

The factory letter describes the revolver as: "Caliber: .41/c, Barrel Length 3 1/2", Finish: Blue". The type of grips fitted to the revolver are not listed. The letter states that the revolver was shipped to Hartley & Graham in New York City on August 5, 1881. The revolver has a full nickel plated finish and is fitted with two-piece bird's head pearl grips. The barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap are decorated with a combination of Germanic scroll engraving on punch-dot background and zig-zag scrolls and borders. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.". "COLT D.A. 41" is acid etched in an oval panel on the left side of the barrel. The Colt three date, three line patent marking is roll-stamped on the left side of the frame and "41 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The serial number "31272" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The high quality engraving may have been executed by L.D. Nimschke or his shop; the combination of scrollwork and zig-zag borders is typical of Nimschke's work. Nimschke's shop engraved Colt revolvers for Hartley & Graham in the 1880s.

Very fine as Hartley & Graham embellished. The revolver retains 95% of the retailer applied nickel plated finish with minor wear on the top straps, edges of the frame, inside of the loading gate, sides of the hammer and face of the cylinder. The engraving and Colt factory markings remain crisp. The excellent pearl grips fit the revolver perfectly and show only minor handling wear. The action is crisp and functions well. This is an attractive example of a New York retailer engraved Colt Model 1877 DA Thunderer revolver.
