This is a fine example of a Volcanic No.1 Pocket Pistol that was manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., circa 1857 to 1860. The pistol has the distinctive small brass frame, blued octagon barrel with integral magazine, loading lever with finger hole, casehardened hammer and two-piece varnished walnut grips. The barrel has an iron front sight blade and a fixed iron rear sight is mounted in the frame dovetail. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line legend utilized by the New Haven Arms Co., after the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company was reorganized by Oliver Winchester in April 1857: "NEWHAVEN CONN. PATENT FEB.14.1854". The serial number, "1420" is stamped on the lower left side of the receiver underneath the grips and on the inside of both grips. Total production of the No.1 Pocket Pistol with 3 1/2 inch barrel is estimated at 850 pistols.
