This extraordinary Winchester Third Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine was manufactured in 1922-23 prior to the end of production in 1923 at serial number 720609. The carbine has a blued receiver, 20 inch round barrel, full length magazine, barrel band and buttplate with sliding brass trap, The hammer and lever have a dark, color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are oil finished black walnut. The barrel has a block-mounted front sight with steel blade and folding, adjustable leaf, rear sight. The Third Model receiver has an integral dust cover rail and a dust cover with serrated edges. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING"S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29, 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." on the left side of the barrel behind the lower barrel band. The caliber, "44 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the left side of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The top of the barrel and top of the receiver are stamped with the Winchester oval "W/P" proof mark. "44 CAL." is stamped on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "MODEL 1873/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF." in three lines. The serial number, "717838", is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch,

Condition: Nearly new. The carbine retains 99% plus of the bright original blue finish on the barrel, magazine, barrel bands, rear sight, receiver and dust cover. The buttplate has some flaking at the heel and toe and retains 80% of the original blue finish. The stock and forearm are in nearly new condition. The walnut stock retains nearly all of the original oil finish. The wood has an unhandled 'feathered' grain; wear is limited to several very minor and nearly un-noticeable handling marks. The bore is bright. This is an exceptional example of a late production Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine in nearly new condition. The carbine does appear to have been fired and shows minimal handling wear. This may be the finest Winchester Model 1873 Saddle Ring Carbine extant. It would be impossible to upgrade. This is an outstanding Model 1873 Carbine for the collector who wants the very best example of this important and highly desirable lever action Winchester.
