Navajo Two Grey Hills Trading Post Rug c. 1920's
Featured in this lot is this Navajo Two Grey Hills trading post rug circa 1920's. This rug is a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool and naturally dyed construction. The rug features a cream field with black or brown (in some instances) and red diamonds in the center with a blocky stepped border with a light heathered grey geometric decoration around the diamonds. The rug shows its original "Lazy Lines" throughout the field of the rug. This regional style was started in 1914 by George Bloomfield and Ed Davis at the Toadlena and Two Grey Hills Trading Post. These Navajo rugs are characterized by natural browns, tan, gray, ivory, white, and black. It is not unusual for the blacks to be oven-dyed. Very rarely small amounts of red, orange or blue are used. The patterns usually have a central diamond motif and intricate patterns. The Two Grey Hills weavings are noted for their high quality. The trading post is located in northwest New Mexico, south of Shiprock and northeast of the Crystal area. The condition of this Navajo rug is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this rug are 38" x 64". The thread count is 66 threads per square inch.
